Capitol Federal joins book give-a-ways
Media Invite: United Way’s Young Leaders Society is working to promote reading and foster a love of books. The Junior Leader Readers is working to put a free book in the hand of every Shawnee County public school kindergartner by the end of the school year. To date, the group has distributed over 300 books to students across the community. Its latest book give-a-way with Highland Park Central Elementary is one of several sponsored through Capitol Federal.
“Capitol Federal is proud to support children’s literacy in our community,” said Trevin James, Capitol Federal spokesperson. “We hope that this book program sparks a lifelong love of reading and learning.”Highland Park Central Elementary School’s 70 kindergarten students will participate in a group book reading of The Little Penguin, written by A.J. Wood and illustrated by Stephanie Boey. After the reading, each student will receive a free copy of the book. Five additional books will be donated to the school library for all students to enjoy.
Media is invited to the program which will be Thursday, February 24 at 2:40 p.m. at Highland Park Central Elementary School. A volunteer with Capitol Federal will lead the book reading. Miriam Krehbiel, United Way president and Young Leaders Society volunteers will also be present for the occasion.
The first book program give-a-way through Junior Leader Readers was October 20, 2010 at Scott Elementary School. The group anticipates distributing over 2,200 books to area kindergartners by the end of the 2010 – 2011 school year. Schools included in the program include Topeka Public Schools, USD 501; Auburn Washburn, USD 437; Shawnee Heights, USD 450 and Seaman Schools, USD 345.
ABOUT YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY
YLS consists of community-oriented individuals or couples 40 years of age or younger (or young at heart) who contribute a personal or combined annual gift of $500 or more to United Way. This dynamic group offers its members multiple avenues to Live United; to be involved with United Way community impact activities, to directly improve the lives of others through giving and volunteering, and to ultimately become leaders in the community.
